Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
