The people of Israel observe second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks advance
Israelis have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Key Points in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war administration of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home now and until every captive are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to show their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis desire the conflict to conclude in return for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of six people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
