The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
