The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
An new acronym emerged a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for doctors to treat a minor who has lost their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that atrocities are ongoing. Officials disputes these allegations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
