The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
