The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Audience Reaction

One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
