Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
