Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
