New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
