Weather experts have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

Readings Expected to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this signified the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
