France to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
