British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
