During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
